FIGHTING OF THE SPIRITS
2008 / 10.24 min / Performance video.
Stillness, there is fixity; a centered state of non movement.
Its actuality circular and non-developing;
when the body defies its limitations of movement from which it brings forth a production of space.
"The specter is a paradoxical incorporation, the becoming body, a certain phenomenal and carnal form of the spirit. Neither soul nor body, and both one and the other. For it is flesh and phenomenality that give to the spirit its spectral apparition."
(J. Derrida: Specters of Marx, CH: injunctions of Marx, p 5)
“The definition of a spirit is a power conjoined to a body: because it cannot move on its own accord..”
(Leonardo Da Vinci: From Notebooks, The truth on the spirit)
The performance video, Fighting of the spirits, is based on a theory by Leonardo Da Vinci: ‘The truth on the spirit’ in relation to my own experience on space. Da Vinci’s definition of a spirit is “a power conjoined to a body”. He uses the spirit as a metaphor for explaining the void, the empty-space, nothingness. In the work fighting of the spirits, I have been exploring fixity, a centered state of none movement. Bound to the ground, the body defies its physical limitations. Bringing forth a production of space. The continuity of the Act-struggle, creates an uncertain equilibrium between time and space.
The video investigates the production of spaces from an internal production by means of an agonistic performance, testing physical boundaries and spatial movement.
